Nursing center

At the center of the Former Shitsu Aid Center, cotton fabrics were used for weaving, dyeing, producing somen and bread, and brewing soy sauce. A two-story building with about 19.4m of girder rows and about 5.2m between beams, which uses an eclectic construction method with Western-style technology and a technique that has become established as a unique feature of the Sotome, such as "De Rotz Wall", is a Western European architecture in the early Meiji period. It is important to know the beginning of technology acceptance.
At that time, the construction work itself was also a childbirth business, and Father de Rotz's activities, bringing Western facilities and modern welfare thoughts, can be said to be one of the brilliant achievements of the civilization of modern Japan from Kanmura.
Inside the 1 floor of the nursery, you can see the history of the history of the Former Shitsu Aid Center and the furniture and equipment that were actually used at that time.

Even now, more than 100 years ago

When he saw that Amakawa, which was used as a masonry bonding agent in Japan at the time, was weak when it was hit by rain, Father de Rotz dissolved red soil in water and kneaded lime and sand instead. It was said that they had devised a strong “De Rotz Wall” that was irregularly stacked with local natural stones, and was used for the foundations and most of the walls.

Macaroni factory

The macaroni factory was divided into east and west 2 rooms, with a middle 2 floor in the west room and an iron furnace near the east wall in the east room. At that time, it was called “Macaroni Room” or “Kuraie” because it is a house like a brewery.
According to the document, it seems that macaroni and pasta making machines ordered from the West were installed in the room where the large work table was placed, and even now there are bolt marks that fixed the equipment between the Western soils. You can imagine that macaroni and pasta were manufactured at that time.
The macaroni made here was sold to foreigners in Nagasaki at that time.

Old mill

Father de Rotz, who was also familiar with agriculture, cultivated wheat seeds, which are ingredients for somen, from France, and milled them using a watermill. We also cultivated peanuts, which are oil by a unique method using peanut oil, in local fields. Somen made in this way is still popular under the name of “De Rotz Somen”.

pharmacy

Typhoid fever spread in the Sotome, and it was difficult to recover with medical technology at that time. Therefore, Father de Rotz realized the need for a clinic and pharmacy, ordered medical equipment and drugs from local France and the United Kingdom, hired a doctor, and performed medical care. The pharmacy is now the entrance reception facility of the Former Shitsu Aid Center.
